The 2021 Joburg Indaba, now in its 9th year, took place on 6th & 7th October as an online conference.
As usual, the event was highly engaging and interactive, packed with no-holds-barred constructive conversations on a wide range of critical issues affecting all stakeholders in the mining industry. We were delighted that we had nearly 600 unique attendees over the two days, which is a real testament to the calibre of speakers and the quality of the discussions.
Some of the highlights included: the recommitment of all in the industry to work together with communities and their employees to embrace diversity and inclusion and ensure the upliftment of society, as well as deliver returns to shareholders; the need to collaborate and take urgent action to transition away from fossil fuels and to decarbonise both mining operations and the country; and the changing macro-economic environment which will have a significant impact on the demand for certain commodities and how SA in particular needs to focus on exploration in order to take advantage of this expected upswing in demand.
Speakers also discussed how well South Africa is positioned as a country and a mining sector to seize the opportunities in front of us, ensure economic recovery and prosperity, upgrade essential infrastructure, produce clean energy, increase investment and re-imagine socio-economic development collaboratively.
Renowned as a leading industry gathering, the Joburg Indaba once again brought together CEOs and senior representatives from all major mining houses, local and international investors, government, parastatals, experts from legal and advisory firms and representatives from communities and organized labour.
We are looking forward to welcoming you back in 2022, hopefully at an in-person event, for frank, open and honest discussions around the current state of the mining sector and how all stakeholders can work together to ensure that the industry grasps the opportunities of the future and contributes to economic recovery and development.
We would like to thank our sponsors for their continued support.
