Hydrogen Economy Discussion

Hydrogen Economy Discussion

Implications and opportunities for South Africa
and the mining industry

Is the Hydrogen Economy real or is it hype?

What are the competing scenarios and technologies?

What are the implications and opportunities for South Africa

 and the mining industry?

Wednesday 8th September, online

Resources for Africa held its first online discussion on the Hydrogen Economy on 8th September.

Amidst much debate around the role of green hydrogen as a key energy vector in a decarbonised world, in South Africa the discussion has centred around what the opportunities for the country might be to become a leading player given its unique position as the world’s largest producer of PGMs and its subsequent huge potential for renewable energy production.

Throughout the day, speakers and panelists discussed key questions, such as: Can improvements in the efficiencies and costs of hydrogen production and distribution be realized to enable South Africa to become a key player? How will renewable energy, and hydrogen, scale to the level needed to meet anticipated demand? What specific policy measures and regulations are required?

Brought to you by Resources for Africa, the organisers of the Joburg Indaba, this highly focused online discussion brought together all the key players, including mining companies, OEMs, investors, industry associations, hydrogen equipment suppliers, infrastructure providers and independent advisers, to debate the implications and opportunities of the hydrogen economy for South Africa and the mining industry.

It was fascinating to hear all the international inputs and the enthusiasm for hydrogen’s potential world-wide. It was also heartening to hear all the positive comments about South Africa’s potential for producing and exporting hydrogen and how this could create a completely new industry with significant contributions to GDP and employment. There was also a clear message that South Africa must not squander its early mover advantage and that action needs to be taken now. A clear roadmap, commercialisation strategy and offtake agreements with demand markets were just a few of the items that need to be finalised in the near future in order to progress the country’s hydrogen ambitions.

We look forward to hosting this event again in 2022, hopefully in person!
